Dr. Dag Wormanns
ELK Chest Hospital - Berlin, Germany
Dag Wormanns, MD is head of the radiology department at the ELK chest hospital in Berlin, Germany. He has been very active in CAD applications for lung CT since their first developments, and has been using MEDIAN LMS-Lung for almost three years.

Dr. Wormanns is convinced of the necessity for the radiologists to use CAD applications. “The limited sensitivity of radiologists for the detection of potentially relevant focal lung pathology in chest CT scans is well known. Several studies demonstrated the potential of CAD to increase sensitivity of radiologists. This is why I strongly recommend using a CAD system to double-check chest CT scans.”

According to him, the use of a CAD system makes the radiologist more comfortable with identifying lung cancer or pulmonary metastatic disease in chest CT scans and it helps to detect diseases like lung cancer in an earlier stage when there is a better chance of cure. “At least two patient populations can benefit from application of CAD to their CT data, and both are quite common in the average radiological practice”, says Dr. Wormanns, “patients with known extra-pulmonary malignant tumors and the risk to develop lung metastases, and patients with a high risk to have lung cancer, e.g. heavy smokers. Both population can benefit from a more reliable and earlier diagnosis.”

Dr. Wormanns has helped MEDIAN with the development of LMS-Lung, by providing precious feedback on the application and carrying out several clinical studies with the software. He is very positive regarding the results in terms of sensitivity and false-positives. “LMS-Lung detects pulmonary lesions which have been hardly detected by earlier CAD systems. Especially lesions attached to vessels or bronchi which are extremely difficult to detect for radiologists are detected automatically. The sensitivity of the system is quite high with a reasonably low false positive rate.”
